“Several things. One is it’s already the largest reduction of spending in the federal government’s history. So I know there are lots of folks saying we need to do more. We need to do more. I get it—but we’re not going to pay off the jumbo mortgage in one year. We’re going to have to chip this away.”

On the Legislative Strategy Ahead:

“This is not the last step. This is the first of many steps, but it is the largest reduction we’ve ever done in spending.”

On House and Senate Collaboration:

“Would I do even more [cut spending]? Yes, I would, but the House—some members of the House would do a lot more. Some are afraid to do as much as we did. That—to get 215 votes in the House—we’ve got to get 50-plus votes in the Senate.”
