Lankford Honors National First Responders Day

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — US Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today released the following statement in honor of National First Responders Day:

“First responders are some of the most valued members of every community in our nation, and today we honor first responders and their heroic daily tasks,” said Lankford. “Oklahoma first responders are some of the most highly tested professionals in our nation. From the tragic 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building, to devastating EF5 tornadoes, to deadly, widespread wildfires, and so much more, they are ready for anything and are our first line of defense against terrorism and natural disasters. I will continue to make time to visit with first responders around our state to personally thank them for their service. Thank you.”

Background

Lankford has a strong record of supporting the first responders who serve and protect Oklahoma communities. The Working Families Tax Cuts Act included a deduction for qualified overtime compensation, helping eligible police officers, firefighters, and other first responders keep more of their hard-earned money. Lankford discussed the impact of the no-tax-on-overtime provision with Oklahoma law enforcement leaders, including Moore Police Chief Todd Gibson, last year.

Lankford also cosponsored the Back the Blue Act, which would strengthen penalties for criminals who target law enforcement officers.

He has worked to support firefighters and improve emergency response capabilities as well. In 2023, Lankford introduced the Direct Hire to Fight Fires Act, which would make it easier for federal agencies to hire wildland firefighters and firefighting support personnel.
