Senator Lankford Statement on US Support to Ukraine

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today issued the following statement after the US Department of Defense (DOD) announced plans to provide $250 million in security assistance to Ukraine in order to help Ukraine’s armed forces:

“On a recent visit to Ukraine, I saw firsthand how Russia’s aggressiveness in the region has attempted to break down Ukraine’s Navy and military support,” said Lankford. “It is all too easy to forget that Russia currently occupies a large area of Ukraine and the war is raging every day. I’m pleased to see this announcement from DOD and believe the US should continue to engage with and support Ukraine to ensure they have the resources they need to defend themselves from Russian aggression. A free and prosperous Ukraine is a stabilizing force in the region, and it is in America’s best interest to ensure Ukraine remains free.”

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, Lankford visited Ukraine in May 2019 to conduct oversight on Russian aggression in the region. Lankford continues to push for resources to be provided to Ukraine such as minesweeping technology, natural gas development, and radar technology to help protect their interest in the Black Sea and the Kerch Strait.
